'But that does not mean we want to dominate you by telling you how to put your faith into practice. We want to work together with you so you will be full of joy, for it is by your own faith that you stand firm.' 2 Corinthians 1:24 (NLT)
I stood on the hill and cast my eyes around. All around was empty space, I looked for those who had gone ahead before me; sought for those on whom I could be comforted. But there was no-one, no-one to help. No-one to encourage me; to hold me as I walked through this valley….
– PASSAGE –
There are times that we look for other people to justify our faith, to encourage us. People we can look up to and say, if so, so and so are still going strong, still in the faith then I can keep going strong too. I can keep believing, I can make it through these struggles and tribulations, I can be victorious.
This verse is a great reminder that we need to have our faith, for ourselves. We don’t come to God for other people, we come to God for ourselves! There will be times when we look around us to find those who were ahead of us, who we were expecting to still be in the faith, gone. In that scenario, what would happen to you, to your faith? When those you were depending on are gone or even departed from the faith what will be your response? Will you falter, will you lose your faith?
Here in 2 Corinthians, Paul is making it clear that it is by our own faith that we stand. When the sickness comes, when fear of death comes the only thing that will enable us to stand is our own faith, not our parents’ not our pastors’ but our own faith and beliefs about God.
I’m encouraging you today to you seek to build your own faith. To build your faith on the Solid Rock – Jesus Christ. All other ground is sinking, fallible ground. A lack of personal belief will lead to a falling away when the going gets tough. When those we depend on and look up to are no longer there. Put your faith in God, and know Him for yourself. This is the way we will all STAND.
.... But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. Joshua 24:15b (NIV)
